The car – used by Richards while the Rolling Stones were based in the south of France – was expected to fetch £18,000-22,000, but was sold to an unnamed buyer for £37,950 yesterday.

Richards grew up in Dartford and met fellow rocker Mick Jagger when the pair attended the town’s Wentworth Primary School.

The car was sold by Bonhams at the RAF Museum, Hendon.
