Simon King is already dreaming about making a return to the field in a Gillingham shirt.

The last time the defender, pictured, played for the Gills competitively was when they won at Wembley in the League 2 play-off final in May 2009.

An ankle injury has kept him sidelined ever since but news that he could be training soon and possibly playing by Christmas has given him a massive boost.

"It’s been so long now that when I do get back out there it’s probably going to be the best feeling I’ve ever had in my football career," said King.

"It will be nice to finally pull that shirt on again and walk out at Priestfield. It gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.

"When I found out I could start training in four or five weeks I was delighted. Maybe I shouldn’t have told the boys, though, because it’s turned the gaffer’s head and that adds a bit of pressure."

King admits his ankle will never be perfect and that may mean he has to be cautious for the rest of his career.

"I’m not sure I’ll be in every day to train and that’s something to discuss," he said. "So long as I’m fit for Saturdays, that’s the main aim."
