THIS coming Sunday marks the end of the ride for Dreamland amusement park on Margate seafront.

For more than 140 years the site has offered generations of residents and visitors all the fun of the fair, changing through the decades as technology took over from tradition.

Owner Jimmy Godden is selling the site due to dwindling visitor numbers and the last season has seen the park run by funfair operator David Wallis.

Thanet council is looking at a number of options for the site through its Margate Masterplan project, and council leader Cllr Sandy Ezekiel said: “Whatever happens, we want that location to retain a leisure and family use.”

Dreamland park spokesman David Bill said: “We will definitely be closing our doors on Sunday. The park will be open from 11am until 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

"We are offering our customers a special rate of 50p per ride. We want to give as many people as possible the chance to have one last look around.

"The park closes on Sunday and the Log Ride will start to be taken down on Monday. I'm sorry to say that the park will just be fading away.”

The Save the Scenic Railway campaign to retain the oldest wooden rollercoaster in the UK still hopes to find a way to keep the ride in Margate.
