Early plans for freight depot bigger than KIG
Published: 13:51, 16 April 2009
Early proposals have been drawn up for a huge road/rail freight depot larger than the proposed Kent International Gateway (KIG) site.
Developers have approached councils about the plans for a 259-acre site near Borough Green.
That is the equivalent of around 73 football pitches.
KIG, the planned freight depot near Bearsted, would be 250 acres.
The Borough Green depot would stretch between the M26 motorway and West Malling to London railway line and house enormous 17m high "sheds".
Early proposals have been shown to Tonbridge and Malling council and parish councils.
Council officers say the plan is being put forward as an alternative to the KIG depot.
Cemex UK and Borough Green Sandpits - who together own much of the land earmarked for the depot - have been named as the main developers behind the scheme.
