Work is under way to repair sea defences along the Kent coast after they were battered by powerful waves earlier this month.

Officials at the Environment Agency estimate that around 30,000m³ of shinge has been swept away from some beaches in the county – enough to fill 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

They have now brought in bulldozers to repair shingle banks and are patching up sea defences to ensure they provide the maximum level of protection.

The south Kent coast was one of the areas worst affected by this month's sea storms.

Extra shingle has been delivered to Denge to reinstate the flood defences near Dungeness power station.

At nearby Lydd, storm ridges have been pushed up from the foreshore to replace the crest of the beach.
