Botany Bay, Thanet

Police have revealed a bomb found on a Kent golf course was an Second World War anti tank device.

Bomb disposal experts were called to Westgate and Birchington Golf Club at 10.35am yesterday morning.

It followed reports of a landmine unearthed by a greenkeeper preparing to plant a tree.

Officers sealed off space between the 2nd and 12th holes so bomb disposal experts from the Royal Logistics Corps could assess the British-made device.

The bomb - around the size of a dinner plate - was deemed unstable and was transported to Botany Bay.

It was then surrounded by sandbags and subjected to a controlled explosion.
