FACTORY workers and nearby residents had to be evacuated after a fire caused by a chemical spill. Hopewell Drive in Chatham was closed by police for about three hours while firefighters tackled the blaze.

Chemical experts were brought in to identify the substances involved and ensure the safety of those living and working in and around Custom Powder Coating on Longwing Industrial Estate.

Ten workers from the window manufacturing factory and the residents of four houses directly behind the factory were evacuated.

Seven of the 10 employees were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital for check ups but the chemicals were confirmed as being harmless.

The accident happened on saturday after the chemicals were spilled on the floor and sparked by a nearby heater. Six fire engines, numerous police personnel and an ambulance arrived on the scene just after 9am.

The fire was contained in the factory and firefighters were able to extinguish it in about 20 minutes.

Station commander at Medway fire station Steve Jeffery said at the scene: "A number of chemicals were spilled in the factory. We extinguished the fire and took reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of those living near the factory and those working there at the time of the fire.

"The chemicals are not thought to be harmful but we are awaiting the results from the analysis to confirm this. No-one has been hurt."

Chemical experts confirmed the substances as methanol, a methane compound and sodium hydroxide. Experts said fumes may stick to the roof of the mouth but a rinse of water would remedy it.
