LIFE stopped for Colin and Trish Davis the day their only son was killed by a drunk, speeding motorist.

Lee Davis, 20, was on his way home to parents in Aylesford when James Clement, who was almost twice the legal limit, veered onto the wrong side of the road and smashed into his car, killing him outright.

But 21-year-old Clement, from Lower Horsebridge, Hailsham, East Sussex, was allowed back on the road straight after the crash in September 2005. Because he initially pleaded his innocence, the courts and the police had no power to stop him from driving.

Clement did eventually receive a seven-year jail sentence and a seven-year driving ban after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and causing death by dangerous driving.

Now Mrs Davis, of East Park Road, Royal British Legion Village, is fighting for a change in the law because she believes Clement should have been banned from the day he was charged.

Mrs Davis said: "I’m going to take it all the way because I’m doing it for Lee. This is so nobody else goes through what we are going through."
