FIREFIGHTERS rescued five people from the basement of a block of flats after the lift broke down.

Chains were cut to free access out of the basement of Caulkers House in Shipwrights Avenue, Strood.

Meanwhile, ironing left on top of a hot cooker started a fire in a kitchen in Lodge Hill Lane Chattenden, near Rochester.
