Environment Agency issues flood alerts for Kent

Parts of Kent have been hit by flooding - and further warnings have been issued for more to come.

A flood alert was in place for several areas of the county this afternoon amid concerns strong winds would create tidal surges.

The banks of Faversham Creek burst at around lunchtime, causing water to gush into surrounding roads.

Elsewhere, the busy one-way system near Strood retail park flooded, as did part of Gravesend Promenade after the banks of the River Thames burst.

Water levels breached some coastal defences between noon and 2pm today, but the east of the county appeared to avoid the worst of it.

Canterbury City Council tweeted to say high tide passed without incident, but flood gates would remain closed as a precaution.

This afternoon, further flood alerts were issued for overnight, affecting the coast from Pegwell Bay to Deal, Dartford and Allhallows, and on the Isle of Sheppey and north Kent Coast from Kemsley to Seasalter including Faversham.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "North westerly winds and surge are forecast during a period of high tides.

"Water levels are expected to overtop coastal defences and foreshores between approximately midnight and 2am tonight.

"Key coastal areas at greatest risk include Front Brents at Faversham Creek.

"People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast."

The agency does not expect property flooding, but says it will continue to monitor the situation.
