A severe weather warning has been issued for Kent today with heavy and thundery showers expected throughout the day.

Queues at the Dartford crossing toll booths

One of the Dartford Tunnels was closed for around an hour this morning because of flooding.

Two lanes were closed causing queues on the M25 Dartford Tunnel anticlockwise from A282 (Toll Booths), and congestion on the M25 to J1b A296 Princes Road (Dartford).

The Environment Agency has put 17 flood alert's in place for the south east including the Upper River Medway and River Eden. The advisory urges households to be prepared for flooding, the lowest level of the Agency's Flood Warnings.

The system categorises risk in three phases;

mpu1

Severe Flood Warning, where there is a danger to life.

Flood Warning, flooding expected and immediate action required.

Flood Alert, be prepared for flooding which is possible.

The Met office has indicated rain throughout Sunday, with warnings that outbreaks of heavy and sometimes thundery rain could result in surface water flooding and cause disruption to travel and outdoor activities.
