A district in Kent has become the first in the county to sign the Armed Forces Community Covenant, pledging its support to its local soldiers.

Shepway Council, backed by other local groups and organisations, has signed up for the covenant, which aims to reward and recognise the work of our Armed Forces, including the 1st Batallion The Royal Gurkha Rifles, based at Shorncliffe Barracks, near Folkestone.

Benefits will include discounts at a local sports centre, and the council will also be able to apply for funds to help homeless, injured and struggling current and former armed forces personnel.

Around £30m will be awarded to community projects across the country over the next four years.
