TRIBUTES have been paid to John Gore Phillimore, a former High Sheriff of Kent, who has died at the age of 93. He served as High Sheriff and deputy-lieutenant of Kent during the 1970s.

Stanley Blow, a former deputy lieutenant of Kent, described Mr Gore Phillimore as charming man. He said: "I used to organise quite a lot of charity events and he always assisted. He was a generous contributor and I got to know him quite well over the years."

Mr Gore Phillimore was educated at Winchester College and Christ Church, Oxford, and was a partner of Barings Bank where he worked until he retired in 1972. He lived in Newbury, Berkshire, for several years before his death. He leaves a widow, Jill, whom he married in 1951, and two sons and two daughters.
