Fundraising schoolboy Jonjo Heuerman, 13, named in New Year Honours list 2015 for work with Bobby Moore Fund
Published: 22:30, 30 December 2015
A 13-year-old schoolboy has been recognised for his charity fundraising with a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours.
Jonjo Heuerman, an ambassador for the Bobby Moore Fund, is this year’s youngest recipient and has been recognised for services to Cancer Research UK.
He began fundraising in memory of his nan, who died from bowel cancer, and football star Bobby Moore, who suffered the same disease.

Since 2011, Jonjo, of Leyton Cross Road, Wilmington, has taken part in an annual charity walk and raised more than £200,000, enough to fund a clinical trial for two years.
His love of football is very much at the heart of his fundraising and in 2014 the passionate West Ham fan dribbled a football from Southend to West Ham’s Upton Park ground over five days and covering 50 miles.
In February this year he undertook his biggest challenge yet, cycling 700 miles to visit all of the Premier League football clubs in England before returning to London to make a 50-mile walk to each of the remaining Premier League clubs in the capital.
His walks also provide a platform for people to remember loved ones who have lost their lives to cancer through his Angels Ceremony, where he creates a football shirt that lists the names of sufferers.
Jonjo has attended other charity events, such as for Boys Beating Cancer and the Little Havens Hospice.
When he read that the Freehold Community Group was struggling to fund football kit and equipment for coaching sessions for young people from disadvantaged people in Rochdale, he donated his pocket money, footballs and kit to the group.
Helping to keep Britain’s borders safe has earned Austen Marsh recognition in the Queen’s New Year Honours.
Mr Marsh, who lives in Deal, is executive officer of Freight in Coquelles. He has been made a Member of the British Empire (MBE).
He said: “I am delighted and proud to receive this honour in recognition of my contribution to UK Border Security.
“Throughout my 29 years of service I have had the pleasure to work with both individuals and teams who have been professional and dedicated and I consider this honour to be a reward for all those who have given me many years of enjoyable service, whilst doing a difficult and sometimes arduous job.
“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank my family for all of their support and understanding during three decades of shift work and the resulting disturbances.”
A 90-year-old who served in the Second World War is to be made an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.
George Batts, of Chervilles in Barming, has been recognised for his service to veterans, which includes work organising commemorations and compiling an archive of eyewitness accounts from the battlefields.
Mr Batts took part in the Normandy Landings in June 1944 and after joining the Normandy Veterans’ Association in 1988, was appointed National Secretary and Treasurer in 2009.
In the past 10 years he has taken a leading role in organising official commemorations in France, liaising extensively with authorities on both sides of the Channel.
The grandfather-of-two said: “I was surprised, honoured and delighted to be told I would receive an MBE.
“In Normandy there are 17 cemeteries with 21,000 bodies in them. They were mates and colleagues we left behind and who were the real heroes.
"It is essential these memories are preserved forever more and they will always be remembered.”
Former Lydd Mayor Fred Wood-Brignall has also been awarded the MBE for services to the community in Lydd and Romney Marsh.
He was town Mayor from 1988 to 1995, the third longest-serving since 1885, is also past chairman of Kent County Council and Shepway District Council.
A dentist from Hoath has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours list for his charitable medical work in Uganda.
Dr Ashley Lupin has spent many years travelling to Bwindi to perform dentistry, raise money and collect drugs and equipment for a hospital.
He even sponsored a young man to qualify as a dentist.
Dr Lupin, was accompanied on his trips by his wife Moira, who was his practice manager in Kent, but sadly died from cancer aged 57 during the Christmas of 2013.
The citation says he has been given the award for “humanitarian aid to medical training in Uganda”.
He said: “I am proud to accept this, particularly in memory of my wife, who accompanied and worked with me on every visit.
“I am so sorry that she did not live to see our work being recognised in this way. In that way, it is also tinged with sadness that I am not sharing it with her.”
Dr Lupin has worked at his practice in Chatham for 40 years but has also performed dentistry elsewhere in the county, including Faversham and Teynham.
A 92-year-old philanthropist has been knighted in the New Year Honours.
Michael Uren, of Appledore Road, Tenterden, already holds the OBE.
His Michael Uren Foundation make grants to various charities. Accounts dated April, 2015, showed it had given out £27.89 million.
Recent beneficiaries have included Chatham’s Historic Dockyard, which was given £400,000 in January, 2015, to help fund a new £8.5 million gallery, Command of the Oceans.
The foundation, formed in 2006, had already given £100,000 towards the project.
