Gales batter sea defences along coast

As the wild sea continued to threaten the weakened defences, workers hurried to fill sandbags with earth and stones. Frantic work went on to breach the gaps caused by the relentless battering of the waves, while out at sea the ships could do nothing but wait out the storm. Along the east coast of England there were 1,200 breaches and hundreds of people lost their lives.
