The Conservatives have won a majority in what has been a disastrous night for Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour party.

In one of the few high points for the party, Rosie Duffield retained her seat in Canterbury with a 1,800 majority.

Leader Jeremy Corbyn has already said he will not lead his party into another election.

Damian Green has held Ashford for the Conservatives with 37,270 votes, a majority of 24,029.

00. 29 Swinson, lose some

Former Lib Dem Lembit Opik has some harsh words for leader Jo Swinson, whose Brexit-bashing strategy seems to have backfired badly.

Boris Johnson has already indicated he is expecting a comfortable victory, tweeting: "Thank you to everyone across our great country who voted, who volunteered, who stood as candidates. We live in the greatest democracy in the world."

KentOnline reporters at counts across the county have reported a despondent mood among Labour supporters.

Despite fears the cold weather and dark nights that come with a December election, the turnout for the first few seats suggest people have. In the highly controversial Canterbury seat 76.19% cast their vote. Sevenoaks also passed the 70% mark at 71.35% while Dover and Ashford both registered at 67% and respectively.

Our political editor Paul Francis says that while attention is focusing on Labour's likely poor performance, serious questions will also be asked about the leadership of the Liberal Democrats Jo Swinson. Her party are expected to pick up just 13 seats after vowing to revoke Brexit.
