Assistant manager Ian Hendon says Gillingham will be "more selective" about who they take on trial ahead of the new League 2 campaign.

The Gills have been patient in the transfer market so far this summer, with no new additions to Andy Hessenthaler’s squad, although several high-profile names have departed, including Adebayo Akinfenwa, Andy Barcham and Chris Palmer, who last week joined League 2 rivals Burton.

Last summer the Gills welcomed a host of unfamiliar faces to join pre-season training but Hendon (pictured) insisted they will learn a lesson when they return to training on Monday.

He said: "We’ll have a few trialists in but not loads and loads. If I’m honest, we had every Tom, Dick and Harry along last year and we are definitely going to be more selective this year.

"If they come with a good reputation, then we’ll take a look at them but we won’t just be looking at anybody."

He added: "One day last year we had 44 players in for a pre-season training session and had to split them into four groups of 11.

"Out of those we didn’t take too many but we’ve got an idea what we want this year.

"We’re not planning on having 44 players in again, it was different last year as we had only just come into the club."
