Gillingham assistant manager John Schofield writes exclusively for the KM Group

It was unbelievable last weekend. To be champions of the league, with a game to go, it’s fantastic, after all the hard work and the effort from everybody.

It’s totally justified and there was never any doubt in our mind about how and what we were trying to. We had a winning recipe.

This has been beyond our wildest dreams. To go into a club, in a first season to have got into the play-offs would have been unbelievable but to go up as champions is fantastic.

We had a couple of glasses of bubbly after, as you do. There was relief, not that’s it’s done but that we’ve nailed it!

It is set to be a busy week after Burton, as we have the player-of-the-year event on Sunday and then head to Benidorm on Monday.

After we return, it’s down to the nitty gritty, with player meetings where decisions will be made but that’s the job we’re in. When one job is finished, you are straight onto the next.

As for a holiday, I haven’t got one booked yet but as a Yorkshireman, I like a bargain so will probably save that until the last minute!
