A new striker has become the top priority for Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler after Danny Kedwell picked up an injury at the weekend.

The Gills are chasing at least one new front man, ideally to partner Kedwell, pictured, but those plans have become more urgent with the news he could be missing for Saturday's game at Shrewsbury after suffering a suspected cracked rib in the FA Cup defeat to Stoke.

It leaves Hessenthaler with only Stefan Payne and Dennis Oli to choose from in the striker role – neither of whom have started a league game this season.

"I am concerned because he (Kedwell) has 11 goals and he will keep getting goals," said Hessenthaler.

"It must have been a bad one for him to come off (on Saturday) because he is a soldier. He was loving every minute against Stoke and he was devastated to have to come off."

A deal to sign Bristol Rovers’ Jo Kuffour has been made more difficult after the League 2 side sacked manager Paul Buckle last week.

"Whether that changes the situation, I’m not sure," Hessenthaler said. "We want Jo to come and if we can also bring another body in then that would be nice.

"Certainly now with Kedwell missing we have got a bit of work to do between the chairman and myself over the next few days to maybe bring in a couple of new faces."
