A new striker is unlikely to be in place before Gillingham’s weekend trip to Rotherham.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler (pictured) is still pursuing fresh options upfront and wants a new frontman in place before the transfer window shuts on Wednesday.

Hessenthaler still has funds at his disposal, despite spending big during the summer, and is eyeing a permanent recruit as well as keeping options open on the loan market.

He said: "I would like to think we may have someone in before the window shuts. We will keep working but nothing has come to light as yet.

"We don’t want to fall into a trap of picking up injuries and then being light in that area. There is a concern and we will keep trying."

He added: "There are players out there and ones we quite like that will cost money as well – a fee. We will keep doing our work and hopefully something will come up."

The Gills have been linked to various strikers, including Charlton’s Paul Benson and former loan striker Kevin Lisbie. The club are also casting their eye over some young Premier League forwards.
