Gillingham boss Mark Stimson is hoping his squad have the mental toughness to stay up after their relegation fears heightened at the weekend.

The Gills played well but lost 2-0 at Norwich and Stimson, pictured, believes that whoever handles the pressure best will escape the drop.

Gillingham still hold their destiny in their own hands. Two points separate Stimson’s men and the bottom four with two games to go in League 1.

Stimson said: "We’ve all got tricky games and there is going to be tension around. It’s probably going to be the team that copes with that the best (who) will stay up.

"I would have loved to have been safe by now, but you always have to be realistic, look at it, and think it might come down to the wire.

"It just hasn’t helped with the injuries or suspensions we’ve had, mainly to centre-halves."

The Gills host Southampton on Saturday and have a final game away to fellow strugglers Wycombe. One win from those two should guarantee their safety, but nothing is certain.

"Who knows what will happen?" said Stimson. "Tranmere are below us and if they go and win two games and we get one that won’t be enough. We’ll see."
