Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler has been pleased with the progress made by right-back Matt Fish.

The defender, who ended a three year spell at Dover to join the Gills in the summer, has started the last four matches after coming in for the injured Barry Fuller.

He was beaten to the ball on Saturday, in a move that led to Port Vale’s goal, but the Gills boss knows Fish (pictured) is improving game by game at Football League level.

He said: "He started his career at Crystal Palace and got released and he is growing. He needed to be stronger on the (Port Vale) goal, although he thought he was fouled, and he needs to learn from it but I have been pleased with him."

Fish is an attack-minded full-back and enjoys getting forward at every opportunity, as was evident at the weekend.

Hessenthaler said: "We knew Micky Adams (Vale boss) would play with the wingbacks and at times we forced them back and it gave us space for our wide players to get on. We knew that’s the way they played and that we would get quite a lot of the ball in the full-back area.

"We could have done more with it at times but Fish is growing into it and he has only just come out of non-league."
