Barry Fuller hopes history will repeat itself when Gillingham make the trip to his old club Barnet.

Last season the Gills ended a terrible away record with two wins on their travels in four days. Now, in much happier circumstances, Fuller (pictured) wants more of the same at Underhill on Tuesday.

"That was the start of our season last year," said the 26-year-old right-back.

"We played there on the Tuesday night after beating Oxford on the Saturday for our first away win in a long time.

"The year before we hadn’t won away and we made it a double at Barnet. We can hopefully go there again and make it two more away wins this season in a row."

Fuller’s pre-season may have been soured by the loss of the Gills captaincy and a late start due to an injury carried over from last season, but he is flying at the start of the current campaign.

He has held off the competition of new signing Matt Fish to start the campaign at right-back, helped by the club’s determined approach to fitness levels and his own self respect.

"We were very tired after the Brighton game (last Tuesday) and we had to work hard in that and maybe if we were unfit we would have crumbled on Saturday but we are fitter now," he revealed.

"We played a lot of games in pre-season to get that match fitness and I think it showed.

"For me personally, I didn’t play as much as the others as I was out injured, but there are great fitness levels at the club among the boys."
