Ross Flitney is relishing Tuesday's return to the club who handed him his Football League debut.

The Gillingham keeper, pictured, made his first senior start at Brighton’s old Withdean Stadium and now, eight years later, returns with his new club in the Carling Cup first round after breaking back into the league game.

"I did quite well there when I was on loan so I am looking forward to going back," said the 27-year-old. "They are in a new stadium now, which I haven’t even seen yet, and I am looking forward to it."

Flitney’s league bow, while on loan from Fulham, was in Brighton’s 1-0 win over Chesterfield in September 2003. On Saturday he was celebrating another clean sheet and another win after victory over Cheltenham.

"It wasn’t an overly busy game for myself but it’s always nice to settle in for your first game," he said. "I am delighted with the three points and a clean sheet. I can’t ask for any more."

After leaving Fulham, Flitney spent two years at Barnet, before dropping out of the professional game with spells at Grays and then under Andy Hessenthaler at Dover.

Flitney now faces competition from Argentine Paulo Gazzaniga, along with first year pro Daren Hawkes, but that pressure is something that drives him on.

"It keeps everyone on their toes and means sessions will be sharp and keep us on top form," he said. "I will be doing my best to keep hold of the shirt."
