Jobs are likely to be lost behind the scenes at Gillingham following the club’s on-field failure this season, warned chairman Paul Scally.

The Gills were aiming for League 1 next season but will instead face another season in the basement division. And that, according to Mr Scally, means he has to make cuts.

He said: "It puts huge financial pressures on everyone at the club and behind the scenes to make it all work in League 2, especially when we are trying to maintain a reasonable budget and give everyone a good standard of living.

"As a result of us not being in League 1 next season, or at least being in the play-offs, there are going to have to be cutbacks within the business to make ends meet.

"That’s unfortunate and it’s not fair on those staff that will lose their jobs because they have worked hard.

"But the fact remains that the only income we can generate, over and above what we do generate, is by being in a division higher with all the spin-offs that come from it.

"Emotionally it is difficult but financially it is even more difficult.

"It is a constant battle to try and make ends meet and to balance people’s expectations with the income that we receive."
