Andy Hessenthaler has warned off any clubs who are hoping to prise star asset Jack Payne from their grasp.

The midfielder returned from a 10-week injury absence with a bang on Saturday as he scored from 40 yards.

Gillingham boss Hessenthaler was delighted to have Payne back available and hopes to be able to keep hold of the much-hyped 19-year-old.

Hessenthaler said: "People are always talking about Jack. He loves Gillingham and for him to leave this football club it would have to be something very, very big."

Payne hit the target for only the second time this season at the weekend (pictured) – but it was one to remember.

"He was great and is such a comfortable footballer," said Hessenthaler. "I do give him a bit of a ribbing about his goals. He scored a very good goal at Barnet and that goal (against Bournemouth) was a bit special, it was fantastic strike."

It took Payne's goal tally for the Gills to three. He opened his account last season in the 2-1 win over Stockport.

Do you think Gills will be able to hold onto Payne? Have your say below.
