Andy Hessenthaler believes a more ruthless edge in attack will push Gillingham on to another level.

The Gills boss wants his side to hurt teams when they are on top – something he doesn’t feel they are doing at the moment.

"We need to do better with the football in the final third because we are having a lot of it at the moment," said Hessenthaler.

"Against Rotherham last weekend we had more possession than them but what are we doing with the ball? Are we showing enough quality with it? Probably not at times."

The Gills host Shrewsbury on Saturday and Hessenthaler could make changes.

He was unhappy with the second-half performance when the Gills conceded three against Rotherham.

"I think there maybe one or two (changes) to freshen it up," said Hessenthaler, pictured. "That’s not being nasty to those who we do leave out.

"It’s about the squad and it keeps everyone on their toes. Nobody has a divine right to be in the side. You have to earn the right.

"So far the boys have done great. I am not going to make drastic changes just because we have got beaten, but we just may freshen it up in a couple of areas."

Hessenthaler is hoping Chris Whelpdale (dead leg) can make a return after missing the last three games while Jack Payne (ill) and Joe Martin (cramp) are fit and available for selection again.
