Assistant manager Ian Hendon is all smiles after another Gillingham win

Andy Hessenthaler could bring in another coach rather than a new assistant manager to replace the departed Ian Hendon.

Hendon’s move to West Ham, where has he has been appointed as development coach, was announced by the Hammers at the start of this week.

The two clubs are yet to agree a compensation package but Hessenthaler broke his silence on Tuesday.

He said: “Ian has gone now. I couldn’t stand in his way. We’re disappointed as he worked his socks off for this football club and he knows the division, has a lot of contacts and is well thought of.

“Wally Downes, who worked with us last season, asked to put his name forward.

“I didn’t want to lose Ian but as a friend I had to ask the question. He wanted to speak to them and they offered him the job.”

Hessenthaler ruled out appointing first-team coach Nicky Southall as his new assistant – instead revealing that he plans to bring in another coach and is hoping to make an appointment next week.

How do you think the Gills should replace Hendon? Have your say below.
