Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler is unconcerned by the actions of teams elsewhere in League 2 as he quietly and methodically goes about his transfer business.

The Gills have been put in the shade in the last few weeks by the likes of Crawley, Oxford and Northampton, who have been recruiting players with vigour.

But Hessenthaler (pictured) said: "We are not concerned about other teams, we are just worried about ourselves.

"It’s all about us. The Cheltenham chairman came out and said the lad Crawley signed (Wes Thomas) was an unbelievable deal and a deal some first division teams couldn’t compete with. Fair play to them.

"The bookies, I think, have made them (Crawley) favourites already. I don’t think they make a lot of money on their gates but they have someone there putting money into the club and he wants to have a right go. They have a bit of momentum and want to keep that going."

Crawley appear to have money to spend but Hessenthaler is confident he has the funds to assemble a team capable of challenging them at the top of League 2 this coming season.

He said: "We know what the budget is. It’s competitive and we are confident we can bring in a few players to add to the ones we have got and build a good squad that can compete at that level."
