Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler is on the hunt for Peterborough duo Chris Whelpdale and Charlie Lee.

The two players spent time on loan at Priestfield last season but returned to help Peterborough clinch promotion to the Championship at the end of the season.

Both players were second half substitutes for Peterborough in their 3-0 play-off win over Huddersfield.

Hessenthaler, speaking on the Gills website said: "We would be very interested in signing the pair."

One stumbling block could be a fee which the London Road side are demanding for them.

The decision to release the players was announced on Posh’s website, with a comment from the club’s director of football Barry Fry.

He said: "Charlie and Chris have contributed greatly to the club’s three promotions in the last four years. Transfer fees will be required."

The pair were only with the Gills for a month but made a massive impact and were the catalyst for the club’s upturn in fortunes.

Attacking midfielder Whelpdale played just four games but scored three goals, while Lee also made four appearances and scored once.

Hessenthaler tried but failed to sign Whelpdale again at the end of last season on loan, as Posh were believed to be asking for a fee,
