Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler began plotting the club’s challenge for League 2 honours next season before the dust had even settled on Saturday.

The Gills missed out on a play-off place after losing 3-1 at Chesterfield but Hessenthaler was quick to start looking ahead.

"We need to rebuild and the work starts now," said the Gills manager (pictured).

"We need to think about next season. We wanted to get promoted. It didn’t happen this year but let’s hope we can do it next year."

Just nine of the current squad are contracted for another season with as many as 17 becoming free agents.

"Players will come in and players will go out. That’s going to be the reality. We have to rebuild," Hessenthaler said.

"We believed we had a promotion squad this year but it turned out it was not that.

"I will sit down with the chairman and we will make some decisions. There will be some tough ones.

"The players aren’t silly. We have to do a job and we have to build a team that we feel is right."
