Gillingham manager Martin Allen says finances will determine whether midfielder Jack Payne will follow Paulo Gazzaniga out of Priestfield, after the Argentinian goalkeeper joined Premiership new-boys Southampton on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Twenty-year-old Payne (pictured) has been linked with interest from Peterborough and the Gills boss said: "I hope he is here long-term. Any manager in their right mind doesn’t want to lose their good players, but if the chairman feels the offer is right for the football club, which is not only a team, but a business, then we all have to adhere to that.
"We have to support it, and back him on how the club runs. It’s not my money, so it’s up to him. My job is to get in the best team possible.
"Jack is behind the others, because he didn’t go to France, so he has to do extra training sessions to get up to the fitness levels of the lads who did."
