Gillingham pair Danny Kedwell and Charlie Lee face a race against time to be fit for Saturday's clash with Shrewsbury

Andy Hessenthaler will be waiting anxiously to see if two of his key men will be fit to face Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Striker Danny Kedwell (pictured) and midfielder Charlie Lee both missed training on Tuesday after picking up a bug that has swept through the club.

Kedwell’s absence is Hessenthaler’s biggest concern as he is already badly short of attacking options and is working hard on bringing in a new loan striker before the transfer window shuts on Wednesday night.

Hessenthaler was hit with the virus himself this week but recovered quickly and he’ll be hoping the same happens to his players.

The Gills boss said: “It is a concern but we will have to deal with it and see what happens in the next few days.

“We will keep our fingers crossed. It’s something that knocks you and you need all of your energy, especially against the likes of Shrewsbury.

“We are hopeful we have enough days for them to recover. I would like to think they would be back training Thursday and if they are not then it would be a concern for the weekend.”

Chairman Paul Scally wasn’t immune to the illness either.

Hessenthaler said: “It is like flu, with a sore throat and I had it myself on Monday but I feel okay now. There is a bit going around and even the chairman at the weekend didn’t travel to the game because he felt so rough.”

The Gills could call on Dennis Oli to fill the void, but he has yet to start a match this season, while fellow front man Stefan Payne has also been ill lately.
