Gillingham striker Adam Birchall played a full 90 minutes as he helped defeat his old club Dover 2-1 in a friendly at Crabble on Tuesday night and he was delighted to be back.

Birchall (pictured) was a summer signing last year, but unfortunately suffered a serious injury in a pre-season friendly that ruled him out for the entire season. He is yet to make his competitive debut.

"It’s all about getting minutes under my belt now and trying to impress the gaffer so it’s all looking good at the moment." Birchall said.

"I got on the score sheet again which is important for me so I was delighted with it."

With the new season starting in just two weeks, Birchall believes the club is going to be fully prepared.

He said: "We all feel that we’re moving in the right direction and working so hard on the training ground.

"The gaffers really getting across his ideas and we’re all playing the way he wants us to play, so I’m sure in two weeks time we’ll be raring to go."
