Jack Evans made his senior Gillingham debut on Saturday and boss Andy Hessenthaler believes the teenager is capable of filling a hole in his first team squad.
Evans, who was promoted from last year’s youth team, can help alleviate the lack of cover in the right-back area following Barry Fuller’s season-ending injury.
"I wouldn’t hesitate, if we had a problem with Matt Fish, to throw the young lad in there, he can handle it I am sure," said Hessenthaler.
Evans replaced midfielder Whelpdale late on in the win over Torquay, but is predominantly a full-back.
"It was his first appearance and he has a bright future," said the Gills manager.
"He can play in a number of positions, left-back or right-back, and he can play midfield. He is a strong boy."
