Adebayo Akinfenwa’s time at Gillingham is officially over after the front-man agreed a two year deal at Northampton.

Gillingham striker Adebayo Akinfenwa leaves the field injured against Stockport October 9 2010

The striker netted 11 goals for the Gills last season and manager Andy Hessenthaler was keen to hold onto the 29-year-old.

Hessenthaler offered Akinfenwa a new deal but instead he has returned to the club where he enjoyed his most prolific spell.

He scored 39 goals from 82 starts in his last spell at the Cobblers and it was his scoring form during the 2009/10 campaign that prompted Hessenthaler to sign him on at Priestfield last season.

Last week Hessenthaler admitted he was resigned to losing the striker’s services with several clubs chasing his signature, some from the division above. He has, however, opted to stay in League 2.

Akifnenwa was a popular figure at the Gills during his brief spell and he clocked up 46 appearances for the club and ended the season with the third place trophy in the fans’ player-of-the-year poll.

His departure follows the recent snub from Wycombe’s released front-man Jon-Paul Pittman who opted to join Oxford United instead of the Gills.
