Meal time at the Hughes household - soon to be a familiar sight for TV viewers

The first hour-long programme featuring the life and times of the Hughes family has been aired on prime time television - and we want to know your views.

The Family on Channel 4 shows the round the clock exploits of Simon and Jane Hughes and their four children, from Harbledown, and was filmed over 100 days and nights earlier this year.

In the first episode aired on Wednesday night, rebel daughter Emily, 19, was seen clashing with her parents over her late-night lifestyle.

Former estate agent Simon, 44, admitted he was at a loss to know what to do with her while Jane faced up to her 40th birthday with dread.

The series is directed by BAFTA-award winner Jonathan Smith and filming began just before Christmas.

The latest technology helped capture all the ups and downs of family life. Twenty-one purpose-built wall-mounted cameras were installed around their semi-detached home in Church Hilll and the next door neighbours were moved out to set up a production gallery.

Simon and Jane, as well as daughters Jessica, 22, Emily, Charlotte, 17, and son Tom, 14, all feature.

“We got used to it fairly quickly, the busier it was, the less you remembered the cameras were there at all,” said Jane, who works for a charity.

As well as eight one-hour episodes being shown at 9pm, Channel 4 has also commissioned 15 half-hour episodes called The Family: Teen Stories, focusing on the younger members and the issues they face.

They will be broadcast in the morning, as part of the channel’s education programming and start in November.
