Drivers are warned to expect ice and frost as road temperatures fall below freezing tonight.

A yellow warning for fog is also in place across Kent, with the Met Office predicting poor visibility may cause travel disruptions in the morning.

A fleet of gritters will be out treating main roads across from 3am, in a bid to prevent ice from forming on surfaces.

But Kent County Council warns drivers to take especial care, particularly on minor roads that are left untreated by the gritters.

On social media, the authority wrote: "Motorists are advised to watch out for icy patches/stretches particularly on the untreated roads overnight and into tomorrow morning, and should expect the surface to be slippery.

"They should drive cautiously and be deliberate and slower in actions and not be surprised by 'sudden' traffic light changes or other vehicles braking.

"Harsh braking, harsh steering or harsh aceleration are key precursors to skidding on ice and snow.

"Plan ahead, drive slower, brake in good time."

The Met Office says fog and freezing fog is expected in parts of Kent overnight, and into Monday.

It warns: "The visibility will drop to less than 100m in places and with the increased traffic volumes on Monday morning some transport disruption is possible."

A yellow fog warning is in place across south-east England from 4am until 11am.

Drivers are warned to expect slower journey times, with delays to bus and train services also possible.
