Violent thugs, shoplifters and drink-drivers are among those to face justice in Kent's magistrates' courts in this week's round-up.

Drink driver off the road for more than three years

Paul Eley, of Grimston Gardens, Folkestone, drove a Mercedes in The Road of Remembrance, Folkestone, and gave a breath test of 68 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Magistrates banned the 50-year-old from driving for three years and four months and ordered him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work in the next year. He must also pay £620 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Shoplifter in prison

Craig Dunn, of Westbury Road, Dover, stole meat worth £56 from a shop in Folkestone Road, Dover.

He also stole two bottles of wine worth £14 from a supermarket in Charlton Green, Dover.

He then stole two legs of lamb worth £18 from the same supermarket.

Magistrates sentenced the 24-year-old to 56 days in prison. He must also pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Sweet shoplifter behind bars

Eileen Doherty, of Clifton Road, Folkestone, stole meat and groceries worth £33 from a supermarket in Dover Road, Folkestone.

She also stole confectionary worth £106.25 from a shop in Bouverie Road West, Folkestone.

On two different days she stole confectionary worth £77 and confectionary worth £83.07 from the same shop.

She then had wire cutters and a small lock knife in her possession in Folkestone, for use in connection with theft.

Magistrates sentenced the 33-year-old to 50 days in prison. She must also pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Menace messenger sentenced

Dwayne Duguid, of Norfolk Road, Margate, sent an offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing message.

Magistrate sentenced the 43-year-old to 60 days in prison, suspended for 12 months. He must also pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Police attacker handed 200 hours of unpaid work

Dennis Doughty, of St Nicholas Road, Canterbury, made off without paying for a taxi worth £14.10 and assaulted two men at a supermarket in Ten Perch Road, Canterbury, one of which was racially aggravated.

He also assaulted a police officer at Canterbury Police Station.

Magistrates sentenced the 22-year-old to 150 days in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the next year. He must also pay £314 compensation, £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Multiple offender sentenced

Aaron Jermy, of The Elms, Hersden, drove a Pulse motorbike in Beaver Road, Ashford, while disqualified, with no insurance and without a test certificate.

He also had a lock knife in his possession and gave a breath test of 54 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

Magistrates sentenced the 19-year-old to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for a year, and banned him from driving for three years. He must also pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Tools thief sentenced

David Smart, of Spring Vale, Greenhithe, broke into a lockup in Trebble Road, Swanscombe, and stole electrical cables, wires, metal fittings and tools worth £750.

Magistrates sentenced the 25-year-old to 28 days in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work in the next year.

He must also pay £750 compensation, £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Homeless man sentenced

Homeless Aaron Horsfall damaged a stereo worth £2,000 at an address in Stanley Gardens, Herne Bay, and assaulted a police officer.

On two occasions he failed to surrender to Thanet Magistrates’ Court without reasonable excuse.

Magistrates sentenced the 22-year-old to 140 days in prison, suspended for 12 months. He must also pay £100 compensation.

Two weeks locked up for one man

Homeless Geoffrey Costella damaged cans of lager worth £7.30 at a supermarket in Millstrood Road, Whitstable.

Two days later, he used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards a man at the same supermarket.

Magistrates sentenced the 54-year-old to two weeks in prison.

Three time shoplifter in prison

Gauis Hamilton, of Frederick Road, Deal, stole meat worth £4.50 from a shop in Mill Hill, Deal.

He also stole coffee worth £12 from a service station in London Road, Deal.

He then stole champagne worth £33.98 from another shop in Mill Hill, Deal.

Magistrates sentenced the 48-year-old to 30 days in prison. He must also pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Drunk and disorderly woman sentenced

Danielle Birch, of Luton Road, Chatham, was drunk and disorderly in New Road, Chatham, and assaulted two police officers.

She then failed to surrender to bail at Medway Magistrates’ Court without reasonable excuse.

Magistrates sentenced the 28-year-old to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for a year. She must also pay a £50 fine, £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

100 hours of unpaid work for one assaulter

Joseph Ebdon, of Wellcome Avenue, Dartford, assaulted a police officer in Wellcome Avenue.

Magistrates sentenced the 25-year-old to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work in the next year. He must also pay £100 compensation, £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Meat thief handed curfew

Daniel Cunningham, of Ironside Close, Chatham, stole meat worth £70 from a shop in Main Road, Hoo.

He also stole various items worth £35 and meat worth £40 from the same shop on two separate occasions.

Magistrates sentenced the 41-year-old to 60 days in prison, suspended for two years, and gave him a 54-day curfew to remain at home between 11pm and 6am daily until April 4.

He must also pay £100 compensation and £85 costs.

Driving offender banned

Stephen Swift, of Catherine Street, Rochester, drove a Peugeot 307 in Old Road West, Gravesend, while disqualified and with no insurance.

Magistrates sentenced the 52-year-old to 60 days in prison and banned him from driving for three years and four months.

Because the offences were committed during the operational period of a suspended sentence, the overall length of his sentence is 180 days.

He must also pay a £115 victim surcharge.

104 days in prison for serial shoplifter

Peter Solly, of Rochester Street, Chatham, stole cheese, cleaning products, meat, coffee, deodorants and washing gels worth a total of £310 from a shop in Magpie Hall Road, Chatham and a shop in Maritime Way, Chatham.

He then failed to surrender to bail at Medway Police Station without reasonable excuse.

He also stole bottles of milk and whisky worth £85.45 from a supermarket in Courteney Road, Gillingham, stole cheese and meat worth £115.83 from a shop in Maritime Way, Chatham and stole vodka, whisky and kitchen foil worth £109 from a supermarket in Romney Place, Maidstone.

Magistrates sentenced the 38-year-old to 104 days in prison. He must also pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Bank card burglar sentenced

Stephen O'Reily, of Bodiam Close, Gillingham, stole a bank card worth an unknown amount from an address in Gillingham.

Magistrates sentenced the 53-year-old to 90 days in prison, suspended for a year and a half. He must also pay £140 compensation, £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Prison for man who damaged a CCTV camera

Martin Krok, of Bonham Way, Northfleet, damaged a CCTV camera worth £282 at a flat block in Gravesham Court, Gravesend.

Magistrates sentenced the 29-year-old to 20 days in prison. He must also pay £282 compensation and a £115 victim surcharge.

Drink driver banned

Rasa Cmeliauskaite, of Robina Avenue, Gravesend, drove a Citroen C4 in Vale Road, Gravesend, and gave a breath test of 72 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

Magistrates banned the 28-year-old from driving for a year and a half. She must also pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Meat and cheese thief behind bars

Robert Thompson, of The Mount, Chatham, stole meat and cheese worth an unknown amount from a supermarket in High Street, Chatham.

He then failed to surrender to bail at Medway Magistrates’ Court without reasonable excuse.

Magistrates sentenced the 41-year-old to 98 days in prison. Because the offences were committed during the operational period of a suspended sentence, the overall length of his sentence is 264 days. He must also pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Prison for woman who stole £1,155 worth of clothing

Karen Higgs, of St Martin’s Road, Dartford, stole meat, washing powder and chocolate worth £37 from a shop in Henderson Drive, Dartford.

She also stole clothing worth £1,155 from a shop in Kimberley Way, Ashford.

She then stole chocolate bars and air fresheners worth £240 from a shop in Station Road, Longfield.

Magistrates sentenced the 39-year-old to 150 days in prison. She must also pay £1,432 compensation and a £115 victim surcharge.

Four year ban for one man

Ian Grant, of Railway Street, Chatham, drove a Renault Megane in Marlborough Road, Gillingham, while disqualified, without due care and attention and with no insurance.

He also failed to stop the vehicle after a road accident and failed to provide a specimen of blood for analysis.

Magistrates sentenced the 35-year-old to eight months in prison and banned him from driving for four years. He must also pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Stolen goods handler in prison

Derek Neville, of Wodehouse Road, Dartford, handled a stolen Yamaha Vity moped worth £1,000 in Erith.

He also handled a stolen Yamaha FZ600 worth £1,000 in Greenhithe.

Magistrates sentenced the 20-year-old to 240 days in prison. He must also pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

£174 fine for one man

Mark Beaumont, of an unknown address, drove a Ford Transit in Ashford Road, Faversham, and gave a blood test of 180 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 80 milligrammes.

Magistrates banned the 49-year-old from driving for a year and ten months. He must also pay a £174 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Power tool thief sentenced

Joseph Daniels, of Waterlow Road, Maidstone, stole meat worth £100 from a supermarket in Week Street, Maidstone.

He also stole aftershave worth £310 from a shop in The Mall, Maidstone.

On three different days he stole power tools worth a total of £1,181 from a shop in Barker Road, Maidstone.

Magistrate sentenced the 31-year-old to 56 days in prison, suspended for a year and a half. He must also pay £1,250 compensation, £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

240 hours of unpaid work for Gillingham man

Andrew Knowles, of Highridge, used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour in Castle Way, Leybourne.

He also assaulted two police officers in Tonbridge Road, Hadlow, and caused damage worth an unknown amount to a custody cell at Tonbridge Police Station.

Magistrates ordered the 32-year-old to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work in the next year. He must also pay £150 compensation.

Almost two year ban for one man

Russell Barnes, of Station Road, Aylesford, drove a Fiat Bravo on the A20, Aylesford, and gave a urine test of 283 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine. The legal limit is 107 milligrammes.

Magistrates banned the 43-year-old from driving for a year and eleven months. He must also pay a £680 fine, £85 costs and a £68 victim surcharge.

More than three years off the road for Maidstone man

Adam Chawner, of Buckland Hill, drove a Ford Focus in Holland Road, Maidstone, and gave a breath test of 63 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

Magistrates banned the 26-year-old from driving for three years and four months. He must also pay a £400 fine, £85 costs and a £40 victim surcharge.

Champagne thief in jail

Toni Cooney, of St Matthew’s Way, Rochester, stole two bottles of champagne, worth £59.50 from a service station in Holborough Road, Snodland.

Magistrates sentenced the 24-year-old to 120 days in prison.
