It was an emotional journey for Jack Maddams’ parents as they collected their son’s A-level results.

Dad Roger and mum Janet wept tears of joy and sadness when they opened the envelope and saw the 17-year-old had been awarded two As and a B grade for the course work he had completed up until his death in March this year.

Mr Maddams, of Georgian Way, Wigmore, said: “We’re overwhelmed, very pleased and immensely proud of what he achieved.

"Obviously he’s not here to open them himself so we can’t see the look on his face but we are overjoyed

“He did better than he was predicted – I think he was told two As and a C.

“We’ll be travelling to Jack’s brother’s new house in Leicester at the weekend so I’m sure we’ll raise a drink to Jack then.”

Jack, a talented Rochester Math School pupil, died suddenly from a rare heart condition,

He had been studying A-level media studies, art and design and PE.

Examiners marked the course assignments Jack had completed up until his death and used assessments, written testimonies from his teachers and his AS level results to grade his work.

Jack would have gone on to study a foundation degree course at the University College for the Creative Arts.
