Matt Coles says that despite taking six wickets for the England Lions in their thrashing of the touring West Indies, he feels he is still a long way off taking the step up to the full international side.

The Kent fast bowler (pictured) took 2-42 in the first innings and 4-76 in the second as the Lions wrapped up a 10-wicket win.

Coles, who joined the Lions on their winter tour to Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi but failed to make an appearance, said he was delighted to have been given the chance to make his debut at Northampton’s County Ground last week.

He said: "It was a brilliant experience, I really enjoyed the opportunity. I did all right with the ball but not really with the bat – but that’s how it goes sometimes.

"I think I did quite well, so hopefully I will get a go again in the future.

"It’s like taking a step up each time and it’s about moving up a level each time. I know one or two of the lads already in the side, so it was quite nice being welcomed into the team."

However, the 21-year-old, who has progressed through the Kent Academy system, is keeping his feet firmly on the ground and is playing down talk of an England call-up.

He said: "I think I’m still a long way off but I was happy to be part of the England Lions and get some wickets under my belt. It’s given me a taste for more."
