A man has suffered serious burns after a fire collapsed on him in his garden.

The 54-year-old was injured when a brazier collapsed in Northdown Road, Longfield.

Quick-thinking neighbours rushed to his aid - dousing his burns with water.

Fire crews from Dartford station were called shortly after 10.30pm on Friday.

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the man suffered "significant burns" to the lower half of his body, but they are not thought to be life-threatening.

Firefighter David Boakes said: "Although accidents can and do happen it is vital that anyone having a fire in their garden, such as a bonfire or barbeque, puts measures in place to help keep themselves and their family safe from fire."

He added: "I would like to praise the quick actions of the residents who aided their neighbour in his time of need and prevented the burns becoming more serious."
