McDonald's will reopen walk-in takeaways at select UK restaurants ahead of a nationwide roll out later this month.

The fast food restaurant stopped walk-ins at the start of lockdown last month and is bringing them back with tighter safety measures in place.

This week, a small number of McDonald's restaurants will trial reopening walk-in takeaways. The company would not say where these sites are.

New safety measures include visors and masks for customer-facing employees, revised guidance and processes for couriers and enhanced social distancing inside restaurants.

The majority of restaurants are set to reopen for walk-ins across most of the UK from Monday, February 22.

Due to government restrictions, McDonald's is unable to reopen takeaways in Scotland at this time.

A McDonald's spokesman said: "Once again, we would like to thank our franchisees, managers and employees for their ongoing commitment in supporting and implementing all of our updated procedures.

"The wellbeing of our people, as well as our suppliers, couriers and our customers remains our top priority, and we are confident the new processes in place will further enhance our already robust safety measures."
