Published: 00:00, 02 March 2006
PLANS have been announced for this year’s memorial day at the site dedicated to the airmen of the Battle of Britain at Capel, near Folkestone.
On Sunday, July 2, veterans of the battle in 1940 will gather at the memorial together with many of those who supported their efforts on the ground.
They will be joined by special guests, including Air Marshal Sir Glen Torphy, Chief of the Air Staff (Designate) and many members of the public to mark the 66th anniversary of the start of the battle.
Weather permitting, the parade and service will start at 1.30pm with a flypast featuring a Hurricane and Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
The site will be open from 10.30am, giving visitors the chance to inspect the memorial as well as replicas of Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft from the battle and the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall, which contains the names of all the Allied airmen who flew in the battle.
A limited number of tickets are available giving entrance to the guest marquee, including lunch and tea. They cost £30 for members of The Friends of The Few organisation and £35 for others.
Further details are available from Group Captain Patrick Tootal on 01732 870809.
