Rochester cathedral is set to unveil a memorial to the former Bishop of Rochester Dr David Say.

The memorial stone will be dedicated to the much-loved and respected bishop during a special ceremony at the cathedral at 3.15pm on Saturday.

The 104th Bishop of Rochester died in September 2006, aged 91.

He was educated at University College School, Christ’s College, Cambridge, and Ridley Hall, Cambridge. In 1939, he was ordained as a deacon, and as a priest in 1940.

Dr Say held a number of posts within the church before becoming Bishop of Rochester in 1961, a post he held for 27 years.

After his retirement in 1988, he lived in Wye and was active in the parish and as an Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Canterbury Diocese

At Bishop David’s retirement, the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, said of him, “everything he touched turned to gold”. He said he had been one of the church’s most willing and efficient workhorses.

“Here, in the diocese, he enjoyed the reputation of being everybody’s bishop in the fullest sense, equally at home in whatever situation he found himself,” he added.

The inscription on the stone will read Alleluia! On we go! which was Dr Say’s catchphrase.
