Former Gillingham captain Michael Flynn was among the players taking part in the club’s pre-season trip to France.

Flynn, 31, is currently without a club after leaving League 2 Bradford at the end of last season.

The Welshman (pictured) played for the Gills between 2005 and 2007. First joining under then boss Stan Ternent, he was unable to prevent the Gills losing their Championship status but he became a favourite at Priestfield and skippered the side during his last season, although he opted to leave and join Blackpool at the end of the 2006/07 campaign.

He made a total of 105 appearances for Gillingham and scored 21 goals, has also had spells with Huddersfield and Darlington.

Former Barnet captain Mark Hughes was also understood to have been training with the Gills but has since left to try his luck with Cheltenham.

The sessions in France have been under the watchful eye of Niall Clarke, who has been working on a consultancy basis. Clarke is the head of sports science at Premier League champions Manchester City.

He has been helping new conditioning coach James Russell as the countdown to the new League 2 season begins for Allen, assistant John Schofield and their squad.
