Minster-in-Thanet is the county's best village - and that's official!

The community was confirmed as this year's Calor Kent Village of the Year at a ceremony last week and received particular praise for its local businesses, sustainability, way of life and village communications.

Cllr Bob Grove, who represents the Thanet village's ward and lives in Minster, said: "It's a wonderful achievement by a group of hard-working people that includes: Kyla Lamb, parish council clerk; Paul Willins, former district councillor; and Ray Owen, editor of the village magazine, Minster Matters.

"There is a great community spirit in Minster and this award has been very well received by everyone in the village."

Competition judges said the village successfully caters for residents' day-to-day needs, with a "a good variety of watering holes and eateries" as well as "a good mix of shops and businesses".

They said they were "impressed" by work around the village's ancient woodland and in planting a large number of trees.

Communication was described as "particularly strong" and the panel congratulated local people on their monthly magazine, village website, neighbourhood noticeboards and a 30-page 'welcome booklet' for new residents.

Presenting the award to Minster, judges told residents: "This is a very active village with lots going on to satisfy all ages. There is good evidence of extensive community participation with a wide range of regular weekly, monthly and annual events.

"There is a real pride in the local community, as shown by the extensive range of facilities and activities. It is particularly proud of the woodland that was donated and managed by the landowner to help teach children about trees and other environmental matters."

As well as winning the enviable Kent Village of the Year title, Minster residents scooped a total of £500 to spend on local projects, plus a commemorative plaque.

They will also represent the county in a national villages contest, the results of which will be announced later this year.
