Manager Andy Hessenthaler’s future will be on the agenda when Gillingham’s board meet next week.

Gills chairman Paul Scally was left "frustrated, disappointed and angry" at seeing the Gills miss out on promotion for the second successive season.

Despite heavy investment in this season’s squad, Hessenthaler was unable to clinch a play-off spot – a minimum requirement for Gillingham’s chairman.

Mr Scally (pictured above) and the club’s other directors will now decide whether to give Hessenthaler a third chance at climbing out of League 2.

Mr Scally said: "I believe that with the squad we had this season and the investment we put in, we should have achieved it (promotion) and at the very, very worst, we should have made the play-offs. To not qualify for the play-offs, is hard to take.

"It has been a poor season, a disappointing one and I would expect the fans to be frustrated, disappointed and angry and I share their views.

"I can get no comfort out of the season now and over the last two days I have been re-writing all of our budgets."

Mr Scally appointed Hessenthaler (pictured left) on a three-year contract in the summer of 2010.

"My feelings towards the manager haven’t changed," said Mr Scally, who returns from Dubai for this weekend’s final League 2 game against Morecambe and the subsequent meetings.

"I am a great admirer of Andy Hessenthaler as a person, an individual and a manager but it hasn’t happened for him this season and he is equally as disappointed as I am."
