Flood alerts were issued for parts of Kent as rivers and coastlines struggled to cope with high water levels.

The Environment Agency released four flood alerts covering the coast from Kemsley to Seasalter, Whitstable to Margate and Dartford to All Hallows, and the tidal Medway, Medway Estuary and Isle of Grain.

The authority said we were in a period of high spring tides, and people in the affected areas should "be prepared" for flooding.

The alerts were issued for high tide at 1.05pm today.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "Minor flooding of low lying coastal land and roads is possible.

"Please be prepared for tides to be higher than usual. No property flooding is expected at this time."
