A pet dog died in a fire at a home in Twydall last night.
The German Shepherd dog was found upstairs in the property in Lynsted Road.
A member of the family discovered the fire in the dining room after returning home and dialled 999.
Firefighters from Medway fire station were called out at about 6pm to deal with the blaze and used breathing apparatus to enter the home.
A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said:“There was a lot of items stored in the dining room and most of it has been destroyed by the flames.
“There was a lot of smoke damage to the rest of the property and unfortunately the pet dog had been overcome by the smoke and had died in an upstairs room.
“We were on the scene for about two-and-a-half hours getting all the burnt belongings out of the house.
“We then used a new ventilation fan disperse the smoke
“The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it’s not being treated as suspicious.”
